Something completed the old Second Avenue subway line, and other lines were extending themselves too. One reached as far as Stamford; others west, then south. And now it wasn’t just subways, but water leading from reservoirs into the cities, power mains, other tunnels. There is a Thing digging new tunnels. The public seemed pleased with the situation; they could commute into the city more quickly now, and the water pressure had increased. But our leaders had nothing to do with it … [Read more...]
“Undergrounders – III” / Memorable Fancies #598
Something was traveling in the old subway tunnels, the abandoned lines. Expeditions had gone down into the tubes. Some never returned; others fled in panic before the thing from below was upon them. It rumbled like a train, but it was not a train. There were no more trains. <END> If you liked this post, please tell your friends and share a comment here or in StumbleUpon, Reddit, Facebook, or other social websites. The subway lines are gradually approaching the surface of the earth, as they always have beyond the East River or in the Bronx. But this is happening in Manhattan now, too. – Something beneath us seems to need room for its own trains. We hope their subways run more reliably than ours. Or maybe we don’t. <END> If you liked this post, please tell your friends and share a comment here or in StumbleUpon, Reddit, Facebook, or other social websites. “Earth-Shaker – V” / A Memorable Fancy #307
[It was a day of three digits, like “911.” This was April 10th, “410.” Today we finally caught sight of the being that had so distressed us, this Thing, this Bane that we learned to call “Earth-Shaker.”] Pine Creek, in southwest Arkansas, wasn’t much of a stream to begin with but now it just – poured down a hole. Act of God. Act of Beelzebub. Revenge of God. Quantum event. Appeasing the Shaker was attempted. We sacrificed crops, goats, virgins – no, I lied: not virgins. We … [Read more...]

But long before that day we had been scourged by this Thing, this Bane that we learned to call “Earth-Shaker.”] Not just fields and dance-floors, but homes, too, were affected. Some people were afraid to visit their basements; others had disappeared there, taken into the earth. Gradually, basements were abandoned. On Staten Island, for instance, an old … [Read more...]

It was a day of three digits, like “911.” This was “410.” On April 10th, we finally caught sight of the being that had so distressed us. But long before that day we had been scourged by this Thing, this Bane that we learned to call “Earth-Shaker.” The first effects, last August, were reported as unrelated oddities: sinkholes in Florida, for instance, that sucked garden hoses, and homes, to their occasional doom. But then people in several states reported a slight shaking of the earth, not … [Read more...]
