[“Summon the players in / Be proud on a sorry earth” – Adrienne Rich]
This is the fourth act, that nearly final adventure our more modern plays have given up showing, along with the definitive fifth. Everything is resolved in the third act, now. But those fourth acts are waiting, ready to call the first three into question, to accuse them of ending the play too soon.
The audience leaves. The fourth act comes on stage with its stooge, the fifth, ready to be played. Ready to question, then to damn.
