[“the edge of the sea / concerned / with itself” – William Carlos Williams]
The sea is concerned with all the new activity around and on it. There had always been voyagers, some of them human, who seemed to like it and its currents. The sea had never been much concerned with these voyagers – they were just there, flowing with it or floating on it.
But now, …But now – it began with steamships, their coal filthing the air above, the water below. Then bottles and shards of bottles choking its waves and fish and animals, and then the oil.
The oil seems to like it here in my currents, the sea said, and the bottles, too. But I don’t. Not anymore.
And my brother the sky, too. Maybe we’ll just quit.
