[“Where do the multitude of Gods dwell?” – Cicero]
We looked here and there: in the clouds, in the earth we thumped hoping to hear a returning sound, or feel a soft shaking; but there was no response. And when the earthen gods did consent to shake and topple the temples of the sky gods, it was not at our bidding nor at the place where we sacrifice our bleating lambs to them.
Truly, the ways of the gods are beyond us mere mortals. Just in case, however, we have taken up praying.
It is some consolation in the silence.
