In our kingdom, statues are made without arms – that’s the King’s standing order. As his chief minister explained, a statue might, at some unpredictable time, come to life and cause harm.
Also for this reason, statues must not have mouths, lest they wound us with their stony silence; or ears, lest they hear our dismissal of the lives they thought heroic, or at least notable – lives at least worthy of a statue or two – no?
