“Homecoming” / Memorable Fancies #3446

A man returns to his home town after thirty years.

Sadly enough, everyone he knew seems to have died or moved away. He assumes this, because no one remembers the old friends he asks about.

He looks for the home where he grew up, but it’s not there. Locals tell him there’s never been a house there.

He continues asking, now more urgently. He becomes suspicious. Who are all these new people?

Why, instead of joy at his return, or even indifference, do they now flee in panic at his approach?
