We dug it out of the ruins, the ancient Roman statue, in quite good shape, considering. But the head – there was no head on the statue’s broad shoulders.
We began digging to find the head, to set it once again atop the body, that some museum would be more – generous.
But our experts claimed, after careful examination, that there had never been a marble head on those stone-cold shoulders.
And then more closely, stains were found – where real heads might once have been on those shoulders – heads to be changed out as political winds blew, as more citizens were accused of being Caesar’s … enemies.
