“Anomia” / Memorable Fancies #3206

[“Speech always lags behind visual perception” – Jean-Jacques Abrahams]

If perception lagged behind speech, we would believe that what we said drove the thing into being.

But now, with sight before words, we see what we don’t yet name. Then the word comes to us as if by a dark magic.

Or perhaps no word comes to us and we stand stupefied, wondering when if ever the thing’s name will magically appear in our minds so we can speak it.

And forget it again.
