We wander from booth to booth, listen to their theories, applaud or hiss as the mood strikes us. The turned phrase, the outrageous idea, the multisyllabically meaningless … all that is great fun, but of course no one believes these people, whether they speak of heaven, or morals, or of some dubious fancy they call “democracy.”
