[The [ancient Athenians] “have festivals of all sorts, and philosophers from everywhere pull the wool over your eyes and provide recreation.” – Heraclides Creticus]

We wander from booth to booth, listen to their the­ories, applaud or hiss as the mood strikes us. The turned phrase, the outrageous idea, the multisyllabic­ally meaningless … all that is great fun, but of course no one believes these people, whether they speak of heaven, or morals, or of some dubious fancy they call “democracy.”
