“Fame” / Memorable Fancis #2539

Standing up at intermission at the theater – wearily waiting for the supplicants, as they always do at these events, to shake his hand or ask a favor (not for themselves, not at all of course, but in the public interest!) that will improve the nation or perhaps save public funds in the future by spending more now.

But no one comes by. No hands are extended. There are no ugly, posing, preposterous smiles.

He looks around. Others in the theater quickly turn away. Has something happened that he doesn’t know about? Some CNN bulletin that the other important people have quietly noticed during Act I, holding their phones down, out of sight of those others who are also secretly watching their own?
