The king admired himself in a mirror. My! what a handsome chap, and dressed in red and gold, too, and with such a sword! I shall have thousands of these mirrors made, he said to his chamberlain, and given to my subjects, so they can see what a great king they have!
And so thousands of kingly mirrors were made and distributed to the subjects of the kingdom. The king’s courtiers laughed at such great folly, but then worried that the citizens might finally, seeing themselves, realize to what a pitiful state the king had reduced them.
The courtiers were slightly mistaken: the mirrors did reflect the miserable state of the king’s subjects to them, true –
But with such a sword!
