“The Return” / Memorable Fancies #2353

During an out-of-state visit, I encountered several people with the same unusual surname that I have. Why? My family is from the Midwest, not here. Then why the coincidence of names?

And they seemed to know me. “You’ve been gone a long time,” one of them said. Another, “How dare you show your face around here?”

My desperate claims of innocence, my assertions that I’d never been in this part of America before, were unavailing.

Today, if I survive, I’m leaving Altoona forever.

But that’s what I said a long time ago, too.
