“Not From Around Here” / Memorable Fancies #2280

Driving through the Midwest, I stopped for gas and dinner. Curiously, I found that several people here had the same unusual last name I do. Why? I’m from the Coast, not here. Then why the coincidence of names?

And the locals seemed to know me. “You’ve been gone a long time,” one of them said. Another, “How dare you show your face around here?”

My desperate claims of innocence, my assertions that I’d never been in this part of America before, were unavailing.

Today, if I survive, I’m leaving Cedar Rapids forever.

But that’s what I said a long time ago, too.
