At five o’clock, guards shoo the visitors out. The paintings, having no more visitors to preen for, take to showing off for the other paintings, or saying demeaning things about their colors, of the vacuousness of the prince who sat for his portrait, every line of his face wishing he were somewhere else, or someone else.
