In my country, opposition to capital punishment has become so vehement and widespread that we now execute people in secret. We tell them they’re due for “a routine health checkup.” The nice doctor tells the patient “this might sting a little,…”

This whole process is so secret that some of the people we kill don’t even realize that they were found guilty and condemned. We consider this humane; we spare them the agonies of trial, condemnation, preparation for death. To comfort their souls, we deny them the opportunity to regret the crimes they were not told of.
