“Machine Love” / Memorable Fancies #2051

[“Without knowing what is occurring in the central nervous system, how can an observer tell when emotion is present?” – Amélie Rorty]

How can anyone else know what emotion you’re feeling? You could say “I’m angry” and turn your face red and scowl, but that isn’t evidence that you’re angry – you could be an actor, or just pretending.

And how can you know what sort of emotion is present in you? Well, there are brain scans. The machines seem to know when the ‘hate’ center of your brain lights up, or the ‘love’ center, better than you do.

– But that’s only telling us that the machines hate or love – you.
