“Gavin the Sculptor” / Memorable Fancies #1949

Gavin the sculptor toiled for several months on his new project. His last creation, he announced, his final testament.

He kept his studio door locked so no one could see what he was doing. Some of us thought his creative juices had finally dried up and he wasn’t doing anything in his studio but read old newspaper clippings from when he was said to “show promise.”

But one day, he announced a grand opening of his new show, and we went to see what he’d finally come up with. Well, there was a sculpture, life-size and a perfect replica of Gavin himself, slightly crouched as was his habit, right hand reaching for some last touch.

But Gavin himself wasn’t there … was never seen again, actually.
