A New York Eclipse / Memorable Fancies #1940

On July 20, 1963, I was in midtown Manhattan on business. New York’s most recent eclipse occurred that day, a “major partial” reaching its darkest hour at 5 p.m. A strange sight: total strangers talking happily to each other on the street, sharing gasps of awe, handing around viewing-safety glasses a few had thought to bring. Joy, excitement filled the day.

By nightfall, they remembered who they were.
