As your surgery has now taken quite a bit of time – much longer than planned – we just wanted to give you fair warning about that phantasy we’ve been playing in your mind to distract you from what we’re doing to your body.
The problem is the story line – we’re nearing its end. In just a few minutes you’ll be conscious of where you really are – in an operating room, cold air, bright lights, parts of your belly dislodged, edges of your skin spread apart and clamped down.
That “Earth” phantasy you’re in now is promising, we think – the latest one our plot designers have developed. They’re continuing to write even as we speak, but it’s complicated work and they’re always arguing about the next episode. So even though they’re meeting right now, there’s likely to be a gap.
But good news! Our surgical team is confident that they can save your life – just hang in there a while longer.
Oh, “Earth”? Will it survive? That’s one of those points the plot designers are arguing over. You’ll be in the recovery room and conscious before they make up their minds, so it won’t matter to you if “Earth” survives or not.
Oh, you want us to tell you how “Earth” turns out anyway, when they finally decide? That must be a pretty good yarn! I’ll be sure to give the designers your thanks.
Whatever happens.
