There is a wall between our two nations, Us and Them. Not very high, not very sturdy. We’ve come to the brink of war with Them several times, sword- and spear-bearing troops staring at each other across the top of that wall; but we’ve never gone into their land, nor they into ours. The wall could be easily breached, but fear of what might happen has kept it whole.

But now, in a mistaken gesture of trust, our leaders have decided that the wall must come down, and the leaders of Them have agreed.

My old sword is somewhere around the house, probably in the basement. I’m going downstairs now to find it, and its sharpening-stone.
