       Church members were required to pore through old books and find more ancient heresies, and more – so the faith could grow. Then, having run out of old heresies, they made up new ones. Eventually the Rheterians declared their own doctrine to be heretical, and thus the circle was closed and they could rest from their scholarly labors.
