“Would you like to sign up to donate your liver?” she asked, “after you die, that is.” And I said “OK, but who would want a 78 year old liver?” And she said, “Oh, just to keep a patient alive until we can find a permanent liver for him,” and then I didn’t say “so after that my liver would just be tossed out?” And then she didn’t say “Sorry, but the rest of you will have been tossed out long before that. Be thankful for small things.”
