     Margentus the Scribe writes in terror of being discovered, his words more and more hurried, blurred, that the spies of the great king would not somehow find and read them, condemn him to the rack. At last he is satisfied. The results of his researches, those conclusions that he is sure will bring down the monarchy, are safe.        

     Future scholars of the king’s long reign will call his works “indecipherable.”
