     Privately, we applaud those who are hostile and cruel to others, or who betray them. Privately, we toast their excellent citizenship. In public, of course, we are required to despise them, accuse them of treachery, sometimes stake them out in the desert as a lesson – meant to be ignored, of course – for our children.
