“The Shame of Politicians” / Memorable Fancies #1131

          Here in the Dutiful Republic we erect statues of dishonest public officials. A recent Prime Minister, for example: his statue shows him unclothed, hands trying vainly to cover both his nether parts and his huge belly at the same time, a stupid expression on his face. On his name-day, citizens come to the statue to mock and jeer, throw rotten fruit.             

        Our statue-tradition is supposed to keep politicians honest, by threat of humiliation. But it doesn’t work. It’s impossible to humiliate a politician.
