“The Missing Day” / Memorable Fancies #1039

    Would you lose a day of your life for a hundred dollars? A thousand? A million? At some point, you will say “yes.” Which day, you ask, suspiciously, and the man with the thin dark moustache says, “just an ordinary day, a week from Thursday. Nothing of importance would have happened to you on that day. You’ll never miss it. But my client – a very important client – is interested in acquiring that day of your life. That particular day. Very interested.”

     But suspecting a trick, you tell him “no.” Day by day his entreaties become more insistent. Threats are made, bonuses offered. Finally, on Wednesday, you give in, and hurry to deposit your new million dollars before the banks close for the day, go home and take a sleeping pill. Two.

     * * *

     You’re awake now. The bedside clock says it’s Friday. The radio announces a coup, the sudden formation of a new government by someone the media says is you. The old government’s money is suddenly worthless.
