Hymn to Attis [after Hippolytus] / Memorable Fancies #1021

I will hymn thee, Attis, Bright-one! Not quivering

to buzzing sounds as priests of Bacchus do,

or humming loudly through the nose in time to gut-string twang

as Manicheans do; but all in tune and metered time for Thee

in high clear tones, O Attis, High-one!

I will hymn thee, Attis, Bright-one! Not calling thee

Bacchus or Pan or Adonis as others do,

or nameless All as sophists do,

or Christ as slaves and servants do, O Attis, High-one!
