[“Traveling roads strewn with useless machines” – Roberto Bolaño]

       At first, the discarded machines were only those that had worn out, or been superseded by more-advanced machines. But then a change came about so subtly that few noticed: misbegotten machines were being left beside the road, machines that had never been able to do any real work.

       Had they been flesh and blood, I would have called them failed mutants, victims of some genetic mis-calibration; but these were metal and plastic, not flesh. And yet their cries, as they discovered the curse of their fatal deformities, were quite convincing….
